When life gives you lemons you get generosity?

Proust found deep memories in the aroma of a madeleine (a small sponge cake with a distinctive shell-like shape), but the journal Psychological Science recently reported that the right scent may stimulate fairness and generosity.

In an experiment, groups of subjects were placed in two different rooms, one of which had been sprayed with a citrus-scented cleaner. In the first part of the test, subjects were given cash and asked to share some of it with an anonymous person in another room. In the citrus-scented room, participants gave away twice as much money. ACA Will Celebrate 75th Anniversary in 2015

The year was 1940.  The “turbulent thirties” were giving way to the “uncertain forties”, and pharmacy was looking forward with excitement and anticipation.  The “Empiric Era” of pharmacy was beginning to give way to the “Industrialization Era” which would hold the development of manufacturing and the mass production of medicinal compounds.  The FDA was moving from the Department of Agriculture to the Federal Security Agency.  While the war in Europe was continuing to escalate, few gave much thought to how radically life in the United States would be altered in December of the following year. The American College of Apothecaries presented the 2013 Member of the Year Award to Ernest P. Gates, of Middleton, Massachusetts at the College’s 2014 Annual Educational Conference at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The presentation was made during the Presidents Banquet Friday evening, February 7th. This award, established in 2013, recognizes one ACA member, on an annual basis, for exceptional accomplishment and effort in promoting the College and community pharmacy.

Ernie Gates is the President of Gates Healthcare Associates, where he provides strategic advice, counsel, and support to a broad cross-section of health care organizations, including hospitals, physician practices, pharmacies, and professional associations.

A pharmacist and entrepreneur, he is a pioneer in the fields of pharmacy compounding and fertility medication. Ernie founded and later sold Gates Apothecary, one of the largest compounding pharmacies in the U.S., which became Freedom Drug and then Priority Health Care. He has consulted nationally to physician groups on the topics of women’s health and compounds for fertility and hormone replacement therapy. He has won numerous awards and honors, including the 2009 Honorary Fellowship Award from the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. Clients across the world often seek Mr. Gates’ guidance on the development of compounding pharmacies and their related licensure, certification, and accreditation. American College of Apothecaries Announces New Membership Categories

Bartlett, Tennessee — The American College of Apothecaries (ACA) is pleased to announce the establishment of 2 new membership categories, designed to increase participation in the College by professionals engaged in the entrepreneurial practice of independent community pharmacy.  These new categories are for “Pharmacy Technicians” and “Pharmacy Marketers”. The practice of independent community pharmacy continues to evolve and change.  In an effort to bring new and innovative services and products to patients served by ACA Fellows, a growing variety of personnel are being incorporated into the healthcare teams of ACA member pharmacies. Pharmacy Technicians are skilled and valued healthcare professionals who work side-by-side with pharmacists to help deliver the highest quality of pharmaceutical care possible to the patients they serve.  Their inclusion as members of ACA will bring unique perspectives to our programming and services in the years to come.
